From the information in the book we learn that the Hopi Indians have a different way of looking at creation, life and death, then most North Americans. Here is a link to a site about one of the last living Hopi Elders.Not only did Jacob learn about his North American heritage from his grandfather, he received a few gifts that would later prove to be useful, of which one was a kachina figurine. It might have looked like one of these at this site.On his way to Kenya, Jacob studies some Swahili (scroll down below the advertisments). On these pages you can click on one of the little buttons and then the click the "submit" button to see a list of words in English = Swahili. The "basic words" button has been selected for you. You can even listen to the words being spoken!
Jacob exchanges his US dollars for Kenyan shillings. (in 1997 when this book was written, he received in exchange "a little over a thousand shillings.") Here is the link to the Currency Exchange site again.Here is a picture of Nairobi from the air. Notice all the hi-rise buildings.
