Poachers!

elaphant from car (26 Kb)

Poachers have Jacob!  They are rough with him and he yells out, "I'm American! ... And you better..."  Often tourists seem to have this same idea -- as if because they are from another country they should be treated better.  There are many situations every year around the globe, where tourists are caught doing things that are wrong in foreign countries (they might have known it was, or they might not have) and find out the hard way.  In the case of Jacob, he is so far from any protection, he really should have thought more clearly about his own safety!

Curious what Moja's name really means?   Check it out at this Swahili site.   Hint: look in the Numbers section...  :-)

Poaching is taking place all over Africa.   In Botswana, a country in southern Africa, people are working hard to stop poaching.  This web site about the North Tuli Game Preserve has some excellent information on the project.  There is a slide show at this site as well, which includes some pictures of what poachers really do to elephants.

Supeet leads them, even though he is blind now, to a huge baobab tree.  These trees, probably due to the incredible size they can grow to, and their multiple uses by both man and animal, play a big part in African cultures.  Follow this link to an excellent site describing this amazing plant.

Jacob placed a thorn tree branch behind the truck tire.  Want to see what thorns look like in Africa?  BIG!
